What were the main causes of World War I?

Historians generally agree that the causes of World War I were complex and interconnected. The conflict is often explained through the acronym M.A.I.N., alongside the immediate spark that triggered the war.

1. Militarism

European nations were engaged in an intense arms race. Countries expanded their militaries, increased defense spending, and developed elaborate mobilization plans. This created an environment where military leaders held significant influence over government policy and war was seen as a viable way to solve political disputes.

2. Alliances

By 1914, Europe was divided by a web of mutual defense treaties. The Triple Entente (France, Britain, and Russia) and the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy) meant that a localized conflict could quickly escalate. If one country was attacked, its allies were obligated to join the fight, turning a regional dispute into a continent-wide war.

3. Imperialism

Major European powers competed fiercely for colonies, resources, and market dominance in Africa and Asia. This "Scramble for Empire" increased tensions, as nations often clashed over territorial claims, leading to deep-seated resentment and diplomatic distrust.

4. Nationalism

Intense nationalism—the belief that one's own nation is superior and the desire for self-determination—destabilized multi-ethnic empires. In the Balkans, specifically, Slavic nationalism threatened the stability of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which sought to maintain control over diverse ethnic groups.

The Spark: The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

The immediate catalyst for the war occurred on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo. Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne.

This event triggered the alliance system:

• Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.
• Russia mobilized to support Serbia.
• Germany mobilized to support Austria-Hungary and declared war on Russia and France.
• Great Britain declared war on Germany after it invaded neutral Belgium.
