What was the Cold War and why did it end?

The Cold War was a period of intense geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, along with their respective allies, that lasted roughly from the end of World War II (1945) until the early 1990s.

It was called a "cold" war because the two superpowers never engaged in direct, full-scale military conflict with each other. Instead, they competed through:

• Ideological struggle: Capitalism and democracy versus communism and authoritarianism.
• Proxy wars: Supporting opposing sides in conflicts in regions like Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan.
• Arms and Space races: Building massive nuclear arsenals and competing for technological dominance, most notably in space exploration.
• Espionage and propaganda: Constant efforts to gain intelligence and influence global opinion.

Why did it end?

The Cold War effectively ended between 1989 and 1991 due to a combination of internal and external pressures on the Soviet Union:

• Economic Stagnation: The Soviet economy was struggling under the weight of excessive military spending and the inefficiencies of its centralized planning system.
• Political Reforms: In the 1980s, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev introduced policies of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring). These intended to modernize the system but instead gave citizens the freedom to voice long-standing grievances against the government.
• The Fall of the Berlin Wall: In 1989, a wave of revolutions swept through Eastern Europe. Communist regimes in satellite states fell, and the Berlin Wall—a symbol of the division—was breached, leading to the reunification of Germany.
• The Dissolution of the USSR: By December 1991, the Soviet Union formally dissolved into 15 independent republics, marking the definitive end of the conflict.

The transition was driven by the realization within the Soviet leadership that they could no longer sustain their global commitments, coupled with the immense pressure from democratic movements across the Soviet bloc.
